Social Tennis & Pickleball

We currently have a social group playing on Friday mornings (9.00 -10.00am) which is now a joint Tennis and Pickleball group (due to popular demand). After Tennis or Pickleball most participants follow up for coffee at one of the nearby Cafes. It’s all a lot of fun and everyone is welcome. Pickleball is a work in progress for us, as we are just learning how it works. So come along and have a laugh and some fun playing tennis or pickleball - whatever your preference. We welcome anyone interested in having a hit with us and all standards are welcome.

The club (STC) is pleased to announce that last year 2023, Balnarring and district Community Bank provided $20,000 and the Mornington Peninsula Shire granted us nearly $10,000 to resurface Courts 1 & 2 .

If you have played on the courts recently you will have noticed the improvements.

We are so grateful for their support and look forward to an ongoing relationship with them to make our community an even better place to live. The committee will continue to fundraise and lobby for funding to fix courts 3 & 4 which require resurfacing at a cost of $100,000!

CFA - SHOREHAM FIRE BRIGADE- Established in 1949.

  • Our volunteer fire brigade has two parts, the Brigade and the Auxiliary.

  • The Brigade, lead by Tony and Alan, fights fires locally and sometimes remotely.

  • The Auxiliary, lead by Melody, supports the brigade in social activities. We welcome any locals who wish to join us. We welcome any donations to help us purchase equipment.

  • We are part of the Country Fire Authority’s South-East Region and within that we are part of the “Westernport” Group of brigades. All brigades co-operate to control fires across the State.

  • Please note that Shoreham has been declared an area of high bushfire risk. We rely on residents keeping their properties well maintained.

  • We have a noticeboard at the Post Office where recent information is pinned and some brochures are left for residents to take. You can find more guidance on the CFA’s website, https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare.

CYRIL YOUNG MEMORIAL CHAPEL ASSOCIATION

The C.Y.M.Association works towards its Plan of Restoration of the Bush Chapel and providing for its ongoing stewardship. The existence of an Open Air Chapel in the Buxton Reserve , (abounded by the end of Marine Parade, and Blake Street end), is a largely unknown aspect of Shoreham. The Shire recently allocated $10,000 towards this Restoration and the 1st stage works by a qualified stonemason have been undertaken on the Lectern and Platform. The next stage will involve the 1st row of seating restoration. Drainage works also have been undertaken to improve visitor access to the site . Over the years the chapel seating and stonework has deteriorated but the Chapel still remains a beautiful memorial to the two Young brothers and the Buxton camp.

To harken back to the original history of the “Open Air Chapel”, It was built in the early 1950’s and was integral to the life of those using the former YMCA Camp Buxton established in 1925, on land generously provided by the Buxton family. It was built as a memorial Chapel to the fallen of the YMCA in WW2 and is now listed on the Victorian War Heritage Inventory. The Chapel Lecter was dedicated to Cyril Young’s brother Ivan Charles Young who gave His life in service to his country in the R.A.A.F. in 1942. Cyril Frank Young was Chairman of Camp Buxton Committee in 1939 and also died in active service in 1945.

In 1990 much of Camp Buxton’s land was subdivided for housing with a parcel of land owned and managed by the Shire being added to the Buxton reserve. The buildings forming the old Camp Buxton were sold along with the associated land into private ownership. Unfortunately during the boundary surveys for the sub division of the site, the Chapel was not taken into account and 1/5 of the land was allocated to 39 Marine Parade, the remainder was left within the Buxton Public Reserve . The part of the Chapel on Private land has a “Heritage overlay” and despite this restriction in 2017 MPS published a “ Notice of intention to sell Land “ on which the the Chapel sits. After Protests and submissions from the Young family, the SCA , The Flinders district Historical Society and others the proposed sale was finally thankfully rescinded by an unanimous council vote in 2018 , with a promise to acquire the small portion of land held in private hands.

The CYMCA Inc. was formed in 2018 comprising elected Office bearers , representatives from the Community, the Young Family, RSL, YMCA, FDHS and Campers. Over the years, the lectern area has sustained the most damage, inviting vandalism. Otherwise, the old damage and cracking weakens the structure against further tree fall events and opens the structure to further damage due to the ingress of water. Fund-raising & Publicity has had great success in gaining notice in relevant publications such as the Western Port News. and a great article was later published in the December, 2020 edition of Peninsula Essence magazine.

An inappropriately placed fence appeared unexpectedly between the private property and the immediate Chapel area. CYMCA believes the fence is not located in a good position because it vastly diminishes the Chapel entrance and does not permit screening vegetation as planned. The fence was erected without notification to the CYMCA committee towards the end of February (2021). Dedicated members of the CYMCA, and other involved community groups, despaired as the Shire Council endorsed a boundary fence which effectively destroys an appropriate entry to this culturally significant site in the Buxton Woodland Reserve Shoreham. The significance of the chapel cannot be overlooked as the opening in 1951 was of national significance ! The siting of the boundary is not in accordance with the Council’s own Conservation Management Plan, completed at a cost of $30,000 at ratepayer’s expense. It has significantly curtailed restoration plans for the Chapel and its proximity hindered restoration of the stonework of the chapel entry. However the work continues. In cooperation with The Mornington Peninsula Koala preservation group they are assisting in providing indigenous vegetation including Eucalypts trees for planting within the reserve.

All those involved in the chapel project , the CYMCA (with representatives from SCA, Flinders RSL Sub-Branch, Flinders & District Historical Society, the Shoreham Roads and Reserves Working Group, YMCA Vic, ex-campers at Camp Buxton and Shoreham residents) have consistently been ‘left in the dark’ through all the critical phases of land negotiations with the adjacent landholder, despite policies, strategic plans and community engagement marketed by the MPS. Recognition was finally given by a budget allocation from Council having won a Commonwealth “Saluting Their Service” grant Thanks to Andrew Young, restoration of the platform and the first rows of seats work commenced in 2022. Visitors from the National Trust, Flinders District Historical Society and others gave encouraging support to the group. This news somewhat tempered the disappointment at Council’s mistakes in negotiating the new property boundaries. It can only be hoped that the current boundary fence can be renegotiated in future to give the chapel the entry it deserves for such a culturally significant site.?
