CFA - SHOREHAM FIRE BRIGADE- Established in 1949.
Our volunteer fire brigade has two parts, the brigade and the auxiliary.
The brigade, led by Tony and Alan, fights fires locally and sometimes remotely.
The auxiliary, led by Melody, supports the brigade in social activities.
We welcome any locals who wish to join us. We welcome any donations to help us purchase equipment.
We are part of the Country Fire Authority’s South-East Region and within that we are part of the Westernport group of brigades. All brigades co-operate to control fires across the State.
Please note that Shoreham has been declared an area of high bushfire risk. We rely on residents keeping their properties well maintained.
We have a noticeboard at the Post Office where recent information is pinned and some brochures are left for residents to take. You can find more guidance on the CFA’s website, https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare.

CYRIL YOUNG MEMORIAL CHAPEL ASSOCIATION
The Cyril Young Memorial Association (CYMCA) formed in 2018 in a bid to restore and to look after the open air bush chapel that is named after Captain Cyril Young who died in a WW2 prisoner of war camp in Sarawak in 1945, three months before the camp was liberated and his brother.
It is in the Buxton Reserve and listed as 47-57 Marine Parade, Shoreham.
Cyril Young had been a strong proponent of the former YMCA Buxton that ran from 1925 to the 1970s on 25 acres donated by Walter Henry Buxton, and had promoted the idea of a ‘Chapel in the Woods’ at the camp site.
After the war the chapel was built to honour YMCA members and campers who had served.
The pulpit commemorates Cyril’s brother Ivan Young , also a former YMCA camper and an RAAF Captain and pilot who was died at 21 when he was shot down over Tobruk.
In the 1980s the land was subdivided. Shoreham locals successfully fought to keep the Buxton Reserve as a public woodland. But some of the original chapel area remained in private hands, and the area fell into disrepair.
With help from a Mornington Shire grant, the CYMCA has restored the chapel lectern, platform and benches.
It is made up of local volunteers and representatives of the Young family, meets every second month, and can be contacted at ShorehamBushChapel@gmail.com .

The Cyril Young Memorial Chapel is included in the Victorian War Heritage Inventory as place number 201260 in the category of Monuments and Memorials: see Heritage Victoria’s website .
The Young family has created a website in honour of its relatives which contains further information about Cyril and Ivan Young’s war service and also interesting photos and stories about Camp Buxton in particular. Please click here to visit it.

ST PETER’S CHURCH
St Peter’s Catholic Church was established in 1879 and was one of the first Catholic Churches built in Victoria. Originally located on the corner of Beach Road and Frankston-Flinders Road, it was rebuilt in 1901 with funds raised by the pioneer families. This second timber church was burnt down in 1981 and the current church on Byrnes Road was built in 1984. The beautiful view of Westernport Bay and the peaceful setting make it one of the loveliest churches on the Peninsula.
The parish priest is Father Michael Miles.
We gather for Mass each Sunday at 8am, and a midweek service is held at 9am each Wednesday.
Our community welcomes visitors and holiday makers. Special services occur at Christmas and Easter.
Weddings , funerals , communion for the sick and baptisms are arranged by contacting the Western Port Parish Office in Hastings: telephone 03 59794374, fax 03 59792743, and email immacul@bigpond.net.au
