How you can help keep our village wildlife-friendly

Friends of Shoreham Bushland & Road Reserves

This working group is made up of local volunteers who get together on the fourth Saturday morning of every month at a location specified on our website and Facebook site.

Our next gathering will be on Saturday, 27 September, from 9.30 am at the Howard Street walking track. Gardening tools are supplied as well as morning tea. All you need to bring are a hat, gloves and a water bottle.

We would love you to come along and lend a hand. It is a great way to meet other locals and to learn about wildlife friendly vegetation.

Garden Workshop

You can also help by working to turn your garden into a native habitat that contributes to the Peninsula’s biodiversity.

On Saturday 18 October we are holding a workshop with our wonderful local nursery owner, Kate Skvor, who specialises in native and Indigenous plants.

Called Create a Bushland Garden, the workshop is a hands-on experience of what works best in our area and why.

Venue: Shoreham Native Nursery, 39-45 Blake Street, Shoreham

Time:  9.30am – 11.30am

As numbers are limited, please book by Friday, 10 October by clicking on this link.

There will be more workshops to come.

Sonic Repellers on Cars Curb Roadkill

We are often asked is there anything more we can do to help the local wildlife.

A simple and inexpensive thing is to add a pair of sonic animal repellers to the front of your car.

They emit a sonic whistle which is said to drive kangaroos away from the car, rather than in front of it.

The science might be out on just how effective sonic repellers are, but SCA members have seen kangaroos stand up as cars with repellers attached approach, listen, and hop away from the road.

Among other places they are available at Repco in Rosebud and Mornington, Supercheap Auto in Hastings.

You can also buy them at the Mornington Peninsula Koala Conservation table next to the SCA sausage sizzle at the Shoreham market on Sunday, 21 September.

We believe the investment of under $9.00 for a pair of repellers is well worthwhile.
