From the president’s desk

SCA vice-president Sue Boggan with president Russell Barrett at our famous fundraising sausage sizzle in Shoreham’s market

June 2026

I always think how fortunate we are to experience the seasons in Shoreham. Currently, we are experiencing an early winter with beautiful clear still days and cold damp nights. Those old enough to remember a company called Hecla, that produced Linda Electric Blankets, might recall its slogan was “Sleep wonderfully warm with Linda.” In my case, I sleep wonderfully warm with two Welsh terriers!

The light has changed, the leaves are turning and it’s time to put the garden to bed, go for brisk walks before sitting beside an open fire, with a glass of red wine and a mug of hot chocolate. Some head north to escape the winter blues, but for those of us who remain, it is such a fabulous and invigorating time of year.

The SCA does not suffer from the winter blues; we just continue with our work. This year’s theme is ‘regeneration and revegetation,’ and you will observe refreshing changes as you walk around the village.

With some help from contractors, the volunteer Friends of Shoreham Bushland and Road Reserves has been hard at the job of removing weeds and replacing them with native and indigenous plants.

Take a look at the work underway opposite the Shoreham General Store in Byrnes Road and along Prout Webb Road.

Then get dressed in your best winter attire, including waterproof footwear, and walk through the Buxton Bushland Reserve to the Cyril Young Chapel, another fine example of regeneration and revegetation. We have to thank all our volunteers for what they do. Please don’t suffer the winter blues at home. Instead, join in, it is not only fun but it is also rewarding!

We have the annual Winter Solstice Dinner coming up on Saturday, 20 June. This celebrates the shortest day of the year but for me it marks the beginning of winter. Always a great night, this year’s theme is Asian. Delicious food, wonderful company with the open fire inside and brasiers around the old school building give it a festive atmosphere. You’ll find details below.

Worthy of consideration whilst you are sitting fire side (or with Linda!) is the SCA’s involvement with other community associations around Western Port.  An example of this is our combined and successful pressure to get the speed limit from Hastings to Flinders from 100km to 80km, which not only protects wildlife but improves road safety, especially in this era of potholes.

State government policies around planning seem to be ever changing.  We are working with other associations to stay abreast of what implications changes might have for this part of the Peninsula, taking note of how they will affect Shoreham.  Behind the scenes this is almost a daily task.

Enjoy being incognito in hats, scarves and coats around Shoreham.
