Shoreham wins nature award

We are pleased to announce that the group of local volunteers known as "Friends of Shoreham Bushland and Road Reserves" has been presented with the Mornington Peninsula Shire Manna Gum Award, in recognition of its contribution to environmental preservation.

Founded by the Shoreham Community Association in 2017, the Friends group meets monthly to remove weeds, mulch and plant indigenous species. It has transformed five sites in and around Shoreham.

The Shire's nature systems team supports 60 volunteer groups like the one at Shoreham.

From L- R  Shoreham Friends co-ordinator, Sue Boggan with Shoreham volunteers Collette Day and Lisa How, along with Sue Wade, Nature Links co-ordinator.

At its annual networking event on November 23 at the Coolart Wetland and Homestead where all the Friends group gather to swap information, the Shire presented Sue Boggan, co-ordinator of the Shoreham Friends, with the coveted Manna Award.

In its commendation the Shire praised the group's “ongoing work and commitment to protecting and enhancing the biodiversity values of Shoreham Bushland,” and for making “a remarkable impact in inspiring the local community to actively protect and care for the natural environment in Shoreham.”

Congratulations and thank you to all our volunteers who give of their time with passion each month!

We encourage more Shoreham people to join in.

The Friends of Shoreham Bushland and Road Reserves group meets the 4rth Saturday of each month at 9.30 am. You only need to bring a hat, a water bottle and a pair of gardening gloves. The rest is provided including morning tea!

The takeaway message from all those who come participate is that the sessions are a great way to make new friends and to discover more about our special environment.
