The president’s report

Welcome to Spring!
It was great to see so many people at our recent AGM. The enthusiastic presentations from our various community groups indicate the strength of our community and the importance of co-operation within Shoreham.
Mel Barker’s talk about the Western Port Biosphere Foundation highlighted the diversity of fauna and flora in this unique environment and the importance of creating a sustainable future environmentally, socially and economically.
We farewelled three valuable committee members and with them a wealth of experience.
Liz Matthews
Liz did a wonderful job as committee secretary. She initiated and maintained best practice governance, and her attention to detail and efficiency was a great support to us all. Liz’s contribution to the setting up and running of events was also invaluable, particularly her securement of a Shire grant for the Film Night which has become a popular event.
Marianne Munday
As treasurer Marianne was always thorough, professional, and kept an “eagle eye” on the finances. Marianne was also a great support in so many other areas including our quarterly newsletter.
Kathie Sampson
Kathie always provided the committee with considered comments and support. She was never afraid to put her hand up, and her contribution and rationality will be missed.
Welcome to our new committee members: Michael Stowers, Harrison Jones, David Andrews and Rob Burns. And of course, the ‘old’ team who have worked so hard over the last few years: Sue Boggan, Lee Collins, David Day, Andrew Goddard, Belinda Hawkins, Lisa How and Artie Shearman. I’m really excited about the year ahead and I want to continue with our “regeneration and revegetation” of Shoreham that is already making such a difference to the village.
At last, our noticeboard with the SCA’s weedy sea dragon front and centre has been erected on Shoreham Common on Byrnes Road. It is beautiful!
For those who have been blissfully unaware, getting to this point has involved a saga that’s endured longer than Blue Hills or, for the younger community members, Neighbours.
We encountered insurance and liability issues along the way that were difficult to navigate, however we had great support from the Shire as part of its program of community-led infrastructure works. We thank the Shire officials for their time and patience. We have been advised that the Shire has now developed new policies for any future community-led project, using this infrastructure project as a case study.
A big thank you to our builder, Graham Gower, the Shire for their grant and patience and all those who contributed to this project by supporting our various fundraising projects.
We strongly encourage you to talk with your committee members if there are any matters that are of concern to you in Shoreham, as we will be delighted to assist. When you see me and my two Welsh Terriers out and about, please do stop me and have a chat.
